Jordan Dead Sea tour - The salty waters help you float

Floating on the Dead Sea

Jordan Dead Sea tour

This module will take you on a captivating journey through the heart of Jordan between Petra and Amman. You'll make a splash in the legendary saline waters during this Jordan Dead Sea tour. This salt lake has been a phenomenon since biblical times and to this day these are some of the most wondrous waters in the world. The salt water is not only a natural spa, it is also wonderful place to float around and relax with a good book. You'll continue travelling along one of the largest crusader’s fortresses in the Middle East; a medieval castle with a breath-taking view out across the hauntingly beautiful Jordanian landscape.

Naturally we wouldn’t want you to spend the night in a crowded tourist hotel on the shores of the Dead Sea. That's why you'll stay in the historical town of Madaba. This charming little town filled with minarets and Byzantine church towers is known for its centuries-old mosaics and mysterious chapels.

Day 1: Amman - Madaba

After breakfast, you'll pack your belongings together and check out of your hotel to begin your Jordan Dead Sea tour. Here, our driver will be waiting for you and will load your baggage into his car before driving through the suburbs of Amman towards the town of Madaba. As you leave the capital, you'll drive through sloping fields of wheat, barley and tobacco. Soon you'll reach Madaba, an important spiritual epicentre in biblical times. The Byzantines built elegant churches with intriguing mosaics in this city. Through the centuries, these works of art disappeared under layers of dust and it wasn't until the 19th century that they were rediscovered. Their brightly coloured stones and intricate shapes and patterns make it hard to believe they date back several centuries. The most well-known mosaic is the map mosaic located in the grand church of Saint George.

We recommend continuing on to the Madaba Archaeological Park where you can see more historic mosaics. Most of these have only been uncovered for a few decades. Their shining terra and ochre colours give them a magical appeal. If you still have some energy after this trip, walk through the fertile hills of Madaba and the popular biblical Mount Nebo. If you'd rather stay in Madaba, you can stroll through the colourful Bedouin markets. You'll spend the night in a small, cosy hotel near the centre of Madaba.

Day 2: Madaba - Kerak

After breakfast our driver will pick you up at your hotel and you'll start off on your Jordan Dead Sea tour. The Dead Sea is the lowest lying lake in the world. The drive to this biblical lake is spectacular at times. As you descend to the Dead Sea you'll pass through valleys and small patches of farmland that have been cultivated for thousands of years. Here and there you'll see small babbling brooks running down through gullies.

All at once you'll see the sparkling waters of the Dead Sea reflecting the morning sunshine in front of you. At long last you'll see the legendary 'sea' with your own two eyes! Your driver will drop you off on the shores of the Dead Sea, near a hotel where you can hire a towel if necessary and use their showers. The water in this lake is 9 times as salty as the waters in the North Sea. The water's salts and minerals are a natural health spa for your body and of course it's fun to float around on the salty water. Bring along a good book and enjoy reading and floating around, but be careful not to get the water in your mouth or eyes...

End of the Jordan Dead Sea tour

Today marks the last day of your Jordan Dead Sea tour. So, after you've had your fill of floating, you'll continue on towards Kerak. You'll travel along the historic King's Road, a caravan road that runs through a fascinating desert landscape scattered with historic remnants. Not long after you leave the Dead Sea behind you, you'll drive through a dry region of hills. At the foot of the highest peak lies the small town of Kerak. Far above the town's houses you'll see the medieval crusader's fortress. The striking castle ruins offer an incredible view of the entire area. Your driver will drop you off at the entrance of Kerak. You'll have plenty of time to visit the castle and to learn more about the heroic legends of this fortress.

After your visit to the crusader's castle you'll continue on along King's Road to the TransJordanian Highway. Depending on your Jordan travel plans your driver will take a right-turn to Petra and you'll continue with the Petra Wadi Rum tour or you'll go left to Amman.

If you're arriving from Petra before this module, you can do this module in reverse. This will take you from Kerak across the King's Road to the Dead Sea and Madaba. During the last day of the module you'll travel to the Jordanian capital where you can embark on the module Amman amphitheatres and cities of ruins.
