Day 1: Arrival in Amman

The capital of Jordan, Amman, is about a 6 hour flight away from the UK. You'll need a visa to travel in Jordan; these can easily be purchased at the airport in Jordan. Our representative will be waiting for you in the airport's arrival hall and he/ she will take you to your hotel near the centre of Amman. The hotel is 10-minute taxi cab ride away from the heart of the city.

The capital of Jordan was already a well-known city in Roman times; however it was only a small city until early in the 20th century. The construction of railroads and the arrival of large numbers of immigrants from other Arabic countries caused Amman to grow rapidly since the previous century. The city is nestled between hills and the historic part of the city was built on seven hills. On this first afternoon of your Amman to Jerash tour you may want to go for walk to see the view out across the many white buildings in the city. If you want to immerse yourself in Jordanian culture, you can try out the traditional Arabic bathing and steaming traditions at a hammam. Clean and revitalised you'll sleep like a rose during your first night in Amman.

Day 2: Amman - Jerash (tour)

As you step outside of your hotel after breakfast, the sun will already be shining brightly upon the white streets surrounding your hotel. Your guide will be waiting to take you on a tour through Jerash. In Roman times this city was known as Gerasa and it was one of the most important trading posts in the empire. The city has been exceptionally well preserved and as you walk through the rows of columns and triumphal arches you'll feel as if you've stepped back in time to the days of Ben Hur.

Your guide will drive through Amman's suburbs and on to Jerash. As you near Jerash's fertile grounds, you'll see increasingly colourful scenery. You'll start to see groups of cypress trees and olive gardens with small farms nestled between them. In a lower lying area you'll find the historic city with its temples, ancient Roman bath house ruins and churches dating back to early Christianity. You'll be taken to the most interesting spots, such as the well preserved city gates. You'll also visit the main street where you'll be amazed by the ingenuity and the precision of the Roman architecture. Your guide's stories will make everything around you come to life, making it feel as if you're travelling through time. Naturally you'll have time to stroll past the historical sights on your own as well. After your visit to Jerash, you'll head back to Amman and say goodbye to your guide. It's customary to tip your guide at the end of the excursion.
You'll have the rest of the afternoon to do your own thing in Amman. Although it isn't really known as a beautiful city because of the many concrete buildings, there are many interesting places to visit. We enjoyed visiting Amman’s historic citadel. It lies on the city's highest hill and is made up of a collection of historic ruins and buildings dating back to various periods of time. The site has Biblical references, is associated with iconic deities, was besieged by wars, ruled by celebrated leaders, crushed by earthquakes and home to profoundly different cultures. The most well-known building at the citadel is the Umayyad Palace. Its ancient dome hall has become the symbol for the Jordan capital. As you walk past the ruins of Roman temples and a small byzantine church you'll have an incredible view out across the lower lying areas of the city.

Another famous attraction in the city is the striking Roman amphitheatre. We arrived at the evening and found the structure illuminated like in a fairytale. The theatre was cut out of a hill in the 2nd century and can hold 6000 people. Performances are still held here during the summer months. The highest parts of the theatre let you look out upon the thousands of lights that come on in the city after dark. As a cool breeze cools down the city streets, you'll have your last meal in the city before heading back to your hotel for the night.

Day 3: End of your Amman/Jerash tour

If you want to, you can add an additional night in Amman to your itinerary. If you would prefer to continue travelling, then you'll do so right after breakfast. Our module Floating on the Dead Sea will take you across the historic King's Road on the shores of the lowest lying lake in the world. If you would like to head straight to one of the wonders of the world, Petra, choose add our module Wadis and Wonders of the World to your itinerary.
